LITTLE KNOWN LAWS

EP 577: YAHOO NEWS. WHO KNEW?

SCRIPT:

WITH THE NUMBER OF STRANGE LAWS ON THE BOOKS, IT’S HARD TO KNOW IF YOU’RE PLAYING YOUR PART AS A LAW-ABIDING CITIZEN, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW THE LAW EXISTED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

A STUDY CONDUCTED BY USA TODAY REVEALED THAT IN THE PAST TWO DECADES, CONGRESS HAS PASSED AN AVERAGE OF SEVENTY PERCENT MORE LAWS DURING ELECTION YEARS AS OPPOSED TO NON-ELECTION YEARS, AND THIS ELECTION YEAR MAINTAINED THAT AVERAGE WITH SEVERAL NEW LAWS RECENTLY TAKING EFFECT.

IN CHICAGO, CAB DRIVERS CAN NOW CHARGE PASSENGERS AN ADDITIONAL FIFTY DOLLARS FOR VOMITING IN THEIR CABS. A KENTUCKY LAW FORBIDS RESIDENTS FROM RELEASING FERAL HOGS INTO THE WILD. AND IN VERMONT, MINORS UNDER THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN ARE BANNED FROM USING TANNING BEDS.

IF THOSE LAWS SEEM ODD, BE GLAD YOU AREN'T IN BLYTHE, CALIFORNIA WHERE YOU CAN ONLY WEAR COWBOY BOOTS IF YOU OWN AT LEAST TWO COWS. AND THOUGH REPEALED WHEN CLINT EASTWOOD BECAME MAYOR OF, IN CARMEL, CALIFORNIA THE TOWN PREVIOUSLY BANNED THE ACT OF EATING ICE CREAM ON THE SIDEWALK.

BUT YOU WOULDN'T EVEN MAKE IT ONTO THE SIDEWALK IF YOU WERE IN ILLINOIS WHICH HAS A LAW STATING YOU MUST CONTACT THE POLICE BEFORE ENTERING THE CITY IN AN AUTOMOBILE. AND IF YOU’RE DRIVING THAT AUTOMOBILE TO WEST VIRGINIA, TAKE NOTE OF A STATE LAW THAT FORBIDS A PERSON FROM HOLDING PUBLIC OFFICE IF THEY HAVE EVER PARTICIPATED IN A DUEL.

ANIMAL OWNERS SHOULD TAKE NOTE THAT IN FLORIDA, IF YOU TIE YOUR ELEPHANT TO A PARKING METER, YOU MUST PAY THE SAME METERED FEE YOU WOULD PAY TO PARK YOUR CAR, AND IN MARYLAND, IT IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL TO TAKE YOUR PET LION TO THE MOVIE THEATRE.

PLAYING YOUR PART AS A LAW-ABIDING CITIZEN IS MUCH EASIER WHEN YOU KNOW THE LAW ACTUALLY EXISTS. SO REMEMBER, DON'T FORGET TO PAY THAT METER THE NEXT TIME YOU PARK YOUR ELEPHANT ON THE STREET.
